The Vulnerability of the Active Tenting Phase

Many homeowners assume that because their home is filled with 34,000 cubic feet of lethal sulfuryl fluoride gas, it is perfectly safe from human intrusion. This is a catastrophic miscalculation. The neon-colored tarps draped over your house act like a massive billboard to organized burglary rings, broadcasting two undeniable facts to the neighborhood: 1) The house is completely unoccupied, and 2) Every single window and interior door is standing wide open.

The Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB) mandates that all interior doors, cabinets, and safes be opened to allow the gas to penetrate evenly. Because the gas must circulate, your property’s internal physical security is reduced to zero. If a burglar bypasses the exterior perimeter, they have unhindered access to every room, drawer, and closet in the house.

Thieves bypass the lethal gas by utilizing standard industrial respirators or SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) gear stolen from construction sites or fire departments. They cut a slit in the nylon tarp, force open a poorly secured garage door or secondary entry point, and can strip a house of electronics, jewelry, and easily fenced goods in under ten minutes.

The Chemistry of Aeration and Re-Entry

The lockout period is not simply waiting for the gas to “die.” It is a highly regulated, mathematically calculated aeration process. Sulfuryl fluoride is completely odorless and colorless. To prevent humans from accidentally walking into a gassed structure, the SPCB requires the use of a warning agent called Chloropicrin (commonly known as tear gas).

Chloropicrin is poured into shallow pans inside the house right before the Vikane is released. It evaporates and fills the house with a deeply irritating, eye-watering odor. If you approach a tented house and your eyes begin to burn and your throat closes, the warning agent is actively doing its job.

The secondary phase of logistics involves the teardown. After the mandatory exposure time (usually 18 to 24 hours), the crew returns, unzips the seams of the tarps, and installs massive industrial aeration fans in the doorways. These fans exhaust the toxic air out of the structure. The home remains locked down until the licensee physically walks through the property with a specialized device (like a Spectros ExplorIR) to verify that the concentration of sulfuryl fluoride has dropped below 1 part per million (PPM).

Only when the atmosphere is scientifically proven to be clear will the contractor remove the secondary locks, post the “Safe for Re-Entry” notice on your front door, and return your keys.
